Cabbage with meat and tomato

Ingredients for cooking cabbage with meat and tomato.

  1. Pork 1 kilogram per bone or 700 grams of meat without bone
  2. Cabbage 1.5 kilograms
  3. Onion 1 piece
  4. Tomato sauce (natural) 300 milliliters (not thick)
  5. Chicken broth or water 100 milliliters
  6. Bay leaf 2 pieces
  7. Thyme to taste
  8. Tomato 1 piece (large)
  9. Lard 1 tablespoon
  10. Vegetable oil 2 tablespoons
  11. Salt to taste
  12. Ground black pepper to taste

Cooking:

Step 1: chop the cabbage.


Chop the cabbage into thin strips, removing the stalk and upper stubby leaves in advance.

Step 2: prepare the meat.


I have a pork knuckle cut into pieces. But you can take any other part, and even the flesh, it will turn out delicious, there’s something in the refrigerator.
Salt the slices of pork and pepper them.

Step 3: fry the meat.


Heat the lard in a deep frying pan by mixing it with vegetable oil and put slices of pork in hot fat. Fry them over medium-high heat until golden brown on both sides.
Transfer the meat fried from above while in a plate.

Step 4: stew the cabbage.


And in the same pan in which you fried pork, send diced onions and cook it until tender.
Then send the cabbage to the onion, but not all at once, but in parts, so that it softens a little and settles, giving the place for the next batch. Usually everything happens in three to four sets. Just add a quarter of the whole cabbage, mix, and when it settles a little, add the next part.
Each time, adding a new portion, salt and pepper the cabbage.

When you add all the cabbage, salt and pepper to taste, pour in natural tomato sauce and chicken stock or water, stir, bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes over low heat.

Step 5: add meat and tomato.


Add bay leaf, thyme and mix well. Add the meat, overlaying it with cabbage, and on top put slices of chopped tomato and bring everything to a boil together.

Move the pan to a preheated pan until 180 degrees oven (make sure your pan can be used like that, if not, transfer the cabbage with meat and tomato to a heat-resistant baking sheet). Bake everything for 1 hours 15 minutes, about. In the process, make sure that there is enough water, if necessary, add more broth or boiling water.
Bake everything until the meat is ready (depending on the size of the slices, this may take less time).

Step 6: serve cabbage with meat and tomato.


Serve cabbage with meat and hot tomato. This is a full-fledged dish, you do not need to supplement it with something. Here you have both the first and the side dish. Delicious!

- Natural tomato sauce can be replaced with diluted tomato paste. Just do not add a lot of concentrated tomato paste, it will kill the taste.
